Will Architecture be Transformed by @Eink’s Prism?

The most interesting among new products seen at #CES2015 by our team in Las Vegas last week was the launch of E Ink Prism by E Ink Holdings, the recognized global innovator of electronic ink technology.

CES2015 - E Ink PrismE Ink Prism is a major ground breaking initiative set to deliver unique and dynamic materials for architecture and design incorporating its new colour-changing electronic ink technology. Prism is unique in enabling architects and designers to transform the way spaces and surroundings are experienced.

Architecture, and the environments it creates, is all around us. Traditionally the design elements found in architecture are either static paint or digital displays. Prism delivers a completely new and dynamic capability. It can be incorporated into many existing architectural products to transform an environment (pictured here in a column format), create a one-of-a-kind experience, elevate corporate branding, or build an interactive setting.

Further, Prism materials can be programmed to change automatically, in response to external stimulus, or remain static.

E Ink are most widely known, of course, for the technology behind the screen in Amazon’s e-reader Kindle products.

Prism provides architects and designers with more flexibility of design and a unique way of transforming spaces. Commercial lobbies, airport terminals, and public auditoriums can now automatically change color and enhance the human sensory experience. Customer reception areas can be more interesting and visually exciting, retailers can build dynamic staging elements for their marketing campaigns, and exhibitors can maximize presentations to boost visitor engagement.

E Ink electronic ink technology and products, including Prism, showcase the following features:

  • Fully programmable – giving content providers and designers greater creative freedom;
  • Fully reflective – providing a print or paint-like appearance and a natural visual experience;
  • Low power consumption – requiring very small amount of power only during a visual change – with no electrical outlets required.

“Prism is the next step in E Ink’s diversification initiative,” says Frank Ko, chairman of E Ink Holdings. “E Ink electronic ink technology is unique in that it can be used in many applications outside of eReaders and other display products. Prism will transform architecture products to make them come alive. This is one of many applications where E Ink technology can disrupt a market, the same way it revolutionized the reading market.”

In developing Prism, E Ink scientists built on the wealth of E Ink’s existing intellectual property and further expanded the technology in a number of areas. This new product is a great example of E Ink’s commitment to long term research and investment to develop new products geared toward new markets.

Founded in 1992 by Taiwan’s leading papermaking and printing group YFY, E Ink Holdings Inc. has transformed and defined the eReader market with its ePaper technology, enabling a new multi-billion market in less than 10 years. It is the world’s largest supplier of displays to the eReader market.
