One of the many interesting topics at the Retail Evolution Summit in San Francisco Feb. 17-to-19 will revolve around data under the heading ‘Insights, Innovation and the Great Data Debate’.

Laura Davis-Taylor, executive vice-president, customer experience, Max Media, who will be appearing on a panel alongside Carl Ceresoli, senior director infrastructure and NSO, retail technology group at Microsoft, and Lee Summers, manager – marketing / technology, NFM/Grandscape, says, “For those that have been in the thick of trying to evolve our retail store experiences, the realities of making the grand visions real are not to be taken lightly. Equally challenging is the change management involved in getting the people behind the corporate curtains on the same page around not just what needs to be done, but how.

“Our panel is made up of three seasoned veterans that will share real stories, opinions and suggestions around these issues that others can learn from.”

Davis-Taylor says that key topics that will be explored include:

  • Insights: How do you use insights to define and prioritize what innovation efforts to address? What insight methods work best? What are the watch outs regarding stated desires and behavioral insights? How is (and will) the ‘Internet of Things’ fit into the big picture?
  • Innovation: How do you focus on what you ‘should’ do vs. what you ‘could’ do? Who are the most important teams to involve? Where does the C-suite fit in? How do you manage everyone’s contribution and collaboration? Where is the role of valuation?
  • Data: How does measurement tie into establishing value for a store innovation initiative? What do you need to understand about the ‘Three lenses of data”? What are the most interesting software and hardware technologies you should be working with to gauge it all? What challenges will you encounter when you do?
