X2OMedia, a Barco company since last May, showed us several innovative applications that demonstrate the capabilities and versatility of the company’s HTML5 based X2O platform at #dse2015 last week.

With its modern look and highly intuitive graphical user interface, the X2O platform now makes it easier than ever to create, schedule, and play out dynamic content on visual communication networks.

The platform is designed to streamline content management workflows, and it was one of several things shown and explained by the Barco team. First of all, we found out that Live Dots which we first met a few years ago at what was the Barco lab in New York has been replaced to become Barco Retail and Advertising.

We were then introduced to the Interactive Retail Experience, one of several new products. On this screen, clothing items not only are shown but also described in detail as to fabrics, care, sizes, colours and availability, making it easy for a customer to decide whether decide to ask to try it on, or perhaps simply order it directly. With this screen, the content can be put on screen by either the client or its agency.

We saw a new 2.7 mm LED screen using a common cathode LED that results is the use of 25% less power and production of 25% less heat. It is expected to be of interest to high end retailers and ca dealrships, among others.

Luke Marler-Hausen, channel manager, Barco Retail and Advertising, showed a really great system called Intellisense being developed in Belgium that can use any camera and provides audience analytics. The system uses algorithms and gives the approximate age, sex, skin colour, attention time given to what is on screens and more, but doesn’t take, record or store any image, and falls well under EU privacy laws.

“It will soon be going into trials,”
said Marler-Hausen. “We know that this won’t give any ROI, but clients who want to collate data and have more information feedback for marketing purposes will want it.”

Barco offers touchscreens placed in strategic locations to simulate a retail environment in which customers can interact with screens in order to browse through a catalogue and obtain detailed product information that adapts dynamically to its audience based on gender recognition, mood, and interest. For instant customer support, Barco’s X2O platform also lets shoppers communicate with store personnel via video chat capabilities.

Barco is all about new developments, and we know that there is an 84” interactive LCD screen soon to be launched. As we understand it, it can have a iBeacon, and allow you to see and access it from your desk top. Mansour Brek, vice-president of R&D and CTO, said that, as part of the Connected Workplace, it will be promoted for employee communications, and involve possibilities for live data, video conferencing, group chat, photo, web page and document uploads.

With all those and interactive kiosks being developed for the retail sector, the Barco X2O booth was a busy place.
