SEGD Xlab 2015 Offers Series Of Transforming Sessions

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

The Society for Experiential Graphic Design has a whole series of sessions scheduled for its Xlab 2015 being held during New York Digital Signage Week and all are themed under the word Transformation.

Anyone with some interest in design should be looking into attending this event Nov. 5 event, which is being followed Nov. 6 with a half-day of Xlab and studio tours around Manhattan. Only participants registering before tours fill up can attend a tour.

Xlab is the event where technology, place and design intersect, and each one of the Nov. 5 sessions will be looking at a different sector currently being transformed: Cities, Business, Retail, Wearables, and Public Space.

Speaking on Transforming Cities will be Mike Clare of Intersection and Brad Gleeson of CIVIQ Smartscapes. Their companies are both involved in the LinkNYC project, so the complexities of getting this project up and running are sure to be part of the scenario.

Transforming Business will have three speakers: Flavia Sparancino from Sensing Places, Josh Goldblum from Bluecadet; and Vivian Rosenthal from Snaps. With businesses being transformed every which way from technology, it should be interesting to hear about the role design plays in the overall picture.

The other three sessions take place after lunch.
First up will be Transforming Retail, and with these three speakers involved, we doubt the hour-and-ten-minutes set for their session will be enough. This is a hot topic of the day and tackling it will be Neil Redding of Gensler, David Kepron of Little, and Joseph Karadin of ESI Design. We’ve heard Kepron speak before and even if he was speaking alone for two hours, the audience is guaranteed to be enthralled.

Next will be a session on Transforming Wearables, and with Wearables a relatively new area of technology, we don’t know where speakers Becky Stern of Adafruit and and Terence Caulkins of Arup will lead us.

Last sessions of the day will be Transforming Public Space and with cities being so concerned these days with public spaces, we’re sure that Darren David of Stimulant and Jared Ficklin of ARGO Design will lots to say on the role that the experiential graphic designer can play.

The day starts off with registration and networking at 8 a.m. and the day ends with a SEGD New York Chapter mixer.

We suggest, if these topics grab your interest, that you click here for more information and registration.

The day’s sessions are being held at SVA Theatre, 333 W 23rd St, New York. See you there!
