Couchbase and Gimbal Inc. have announced a strategic partnership to drive a wide range of powerful new mobile applications.

(A NoSQL database provides a mechanism for storage and retrieval of data which is modeled in means other than the tabular relations used in relational databases.)

In discussing the partnership with Couchbase, a major player in NoSQL and mobile technology, which will give retailers and application developers the opportunity to offer consumers a personalized and omni-channel experience on their devices and in stores, Brian Dunphy, Gimbal’s senior vice-president of business development and strategic partnerships, says, “By bridging the gap between online and offline experiences, customers will receive customized content specific to their location, physical actions, as well as their online preferences and activities.”

Using Gimbal and Couchbase, developers can build applications that deliver a real time, personalized and consistent experience. Couchbase Mobile stores data locally, on the device, providing a consistent, fully connected experience, even without a consistent network connection. Having the data stored locally on the device makes it possible for Gimbal beacons to serve customers in any location with real time customized content. The partnership opens the door to a broader variety of retail, hospitality and transportation apps.

For example, national retailers can leverage this technology to bridge the online and in-store shopping experience, by collecting real time shopper data from Gimbal beacons placed in the store, and delivering context aware offers and alerts to mobile devices via Couchbase Mobile.

“Our customers are able to build applications that provide a seamless mobile experience by ensuring data access without a network connection,” says Wayne Carter, chief architect of mobile at Couchbase. “Our partnership with Gimbal gives mobile developers an easier solution for real-time delivery of location aware content to users and customers — regardless of internet service or network congestion – providing a unique and engaging experience.”
