Mexico Bans DailyDOOH In Row Over Tacos

The owners of DailyDOOH have become involved in a a political row with the Mexican embassy in Washington, D.C. and at DSE in Las Vegas last week, it escalated to dizzying new heights when the Mexican government weighed in and banned its citizens from reading DailyDOOH.com [1], and any of the sites belonging to its sister company, the Ministry of New Media.

The complaint hinges on DailyDOOH’s use of the term, the ‘Internet of Tacos’, which the Mexican Ambassador [2] described as racist. He said “Everyone knows that the acronym ‘IoT’ stands for the Internet of Things, not Tacos. Tacos are uniquely Mexican. The two are not related. Tacos are not connected to the cloud. To imply that they are is racist and demeaning to all Mexican people”.

A taco is of course, a traditional Mexican dish composed of a corn or wheat tortilla folded or rolled around a filling – a taco can be made with a variety of fillings, including beef, pork, chicken, seafood, vegetables, and cheese, allowing for great versatility and variety. It’s generally eaten without utensils and is often accompanied by garnishes such as salsa or chili pepper, avocado or guacamole, cilantro (coriander), tomatoes, onions, and lettuce.

Whilst Americans last year ate over 4.5 billion tacos, some, estimate that Mexicans eat 978 million tacos weekly, or 50 billion per year.

The Ministry of New Media’s legal counsel Ke Kwong Phuc said “It is they who are being lacist. This allegation is outrageous, there are no grounds for this and we will fight it rigorously”.

He continued “The Mexican people have the right to read the DailyDOOH. Their government is doing them a disservice by barring access to the premier global news hub for digital signage and digital out of home. We are working hard to get our Mexican readers back online”.

The new firewall rules come into effect April 1, 2017. All thirty three Mexican DailyDOOH readers will be affected and will no longer be able to read DailyDOOH content without somehow bypassing the Mexican firewall.

Jumping into the row, Donald J Trump, President of the United States of America (POTUS) tweeted “I have no idea what a firewall is but it’s a bad idea, a bad idea. The Mexicans have no right to do this”.
