Mediamesh Hits Times Square

At first sight it’s just another digital sign, it’s still early in getting lots of advertisers on board, as of early this week it wasn’t even turned on and adds to the already crowded Times Square digital portfolio BUT to be fair what it does show is that there are people still willing to invest in giant LEDs in prominent city centres.

In this instance The City Investment Fund, L.P.’s new 783-square-foot electronic sign in New York City’s Times Square, at 1605 Broadway, home to the Crowne Plaza hotel is the first in Times Square to use Mediamesh technology (last seen in South Florida).

mediameshFor all the hype around this technology and this new deployment, the sign is actually a very low resolution LED display (245 x 215), built with AG4 LEDs laid out inside clear tubes that are interwoven in a GKD metal ‘mesh (see photo) albeit it’s transparent from the interior of the Crowne Plaza, allowing see-through views of the Times Square area for hotel guests and others.

There were and are a number of parties involved: –

  • Grubb & Ellis are the real estate leasing company backing the LED sign
  • The Crowne Plaza, an InterContinental Hotel, effectively care takers of the sign
  • ABC Media Sales, Gerald Griffin’s group selling the advertising

Rumour has it that the system and sign were deployed so fast, that the sign operations procedure and scheduling strategy is still under development.

Mediamesh technology was developed by ag4 media facade GmbH and partner GKD – Gebr. Kufferath AG., uses high-grade architectural material made of woven stainless steel mesh.
