LA Metro Bus Stop @Papercast_net Signage Hacked

Back in September the LA Metro, after a competitive pilot, selected Papercast to support its NextGen 204 bus corridor along Vermont Avenue.

However, it didn’t take long for bus stops along the route to get hacked.

LA Metro officials have confirmed that the E Ink’s low-power displays at several bus stops were commandeered. They noted that the violent messages could be traced back to the third-party content management system Papercast that they said was ‘compromised’.

“The unauthorized messaging has since been removed. LA Metro is working with Papercast, its third-party vendor, to identify the source of the intrusion and address it.”

It appears that the message was signed with a social media handle that some outlets have reported is a Turkish hacker group that may also be responsible for recently hijacking public announcement systems at multiple airports in North America.

Photos shared online show the digital signage displaying a message that read “EMERGENCY WARNING. LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. RISK OF SUICIDE BOMB.”
