NYTimes.com Ninth Annual Year In Ideas

This is not one of our picks for the year, see our preparation The DailyDOOH Best Of 2009 (Prep) [1] but as we always complain that not enough is done to get our industry in the mainstream press it’s ABSOLUTELY GREAT to see the New York Times pick up on this ‘Advertisement That Watches You [2]

Designed by the Hamburg-based firm Jung von Matt [3] the Berlin poster was a one-time installation sponsored by Amnesty International.

You probably know the story already but as the NYTimes says “when a person in the shelter was looking at the poster, he saw, along with the words, a photograph of an amiable couple: a stocky, professional-looking man in a blue oxford-cloth shirt, his arm around the shoulders of his girlfriend or wife”.

It continues “If no one in the shelter was paying attention to the poster, though, the image switched: now the man was raising his fist against the woman as she leaned away and protected her face.”

Potsdam based company Vis-à-pix [4] created the technology.

We have seen a lot of innovative bus shelter campaigns this year of course – including The Digital Bus Shelter That Weighs You [5] and probably our favourite ‘Goo The Egg [6]‘.

Worthwhile repeating though that it’s great that the NY Times have recognised this.
