Wi-Fi-Enabled Bathroom Scales

Gadget Republic picked up on this first but we thought it worth writing about as it just goes to show how everyday objects are becoming interactive and indeed wireless.

You may be wondering about the benefits of a Wi-Fi-enabled bathroom scale, lest it broadcast your weight to the world, but this world-first from French company Withings records the user’s details and sends them only to a secure, password-protected webpage.

The user’s body weight, lean and fat mass, and calculated body mass index (BMI) is sent from the Wi-Fi Body Scale to this personal webpage so that the efforts of an exercise or diet plan can be monitored daily.

There is also a free iPhone app, WiScale, that allows users to monitor weight on the go.

In order to calculate fat mass and BMI, the scale uses bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA) to allow for more accurate tracking by avoiding daily weight fluctuations due to water weight.

And they won’t look out of place in a designer bathroom: these scales have an extra-flat (23 mm) black and steel design and although ultra high-tech, are priced at €129.
