RIM Acquires Cellmania

Research in Motion, Waterloo, Ontario, has acquired Mountain View, California-based Cellmania, bringing the Mountain View, California, company’s expertise in application storefront development to the BlackBerry platform.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

It is expected that RIM will have acquired Cellmania to be able to offer a framework for vendors developing apps for Blackberries that need back end billing and content management. Cellmania is believed to already have a vast infrastructure in place for working with various carriers, collecting payments from multiple sources and accepting application submissions from developers all over the world, since it powers the individual app stores that mobile phone carriers such as Telefonica, Telus and Sprint tie to many of their feature phones.
