All Shook Up @ SGIA – La Fin

As conventions go, I’d say the Digital Signage portion of the  SGIA Expo was a success. Not having any previous years’ visits to compare, the timing did seem right to introduce DOOH to an industry that’s obviously hungry for information and education. As I mentioned in my last post, I believe the education needs to be targeted more towards asset re-purposing – but that’s just one creative guy’s opinion.

I’d give high fives to David Drain, Executive Director of the Digital Screen Media Association, for making this happen and bringing quality vendors to the table. Also, the Executive team at SGIA for being forward thinking enough to predict their customers’ needs. Thanks also to David for hosting a drinks and get-toghether at the Legassi Stadium – it was a great opportunity to shoot the breeze with colleagues that you don’t often get to meet in person.

For next year there are a few things I’d like to see change or added:-

Overall, I was encouraged  by what I saw – not so much shook up, more slightly stirred. Next year, I suspect, we’ll have an even bigger, better presence, but as the Expo heads into it’s last day this DailyDOOH’er has left the building- thank you very much….

Great to see that SGIA Expo brings Digital Signage to the Sign Industry. viscom in Germany started this in 2007 with great success with the first Digital Signage Day, one of the very first Digital Signage oriented presentation areas on a trade show in Europe – long before ISE had Digital Signage officially on their show. So we learned a lot since then.

Regarding your suggestions for SGIA, that is what we do at viscom Frankfurt:
>More digital screen with great content.
There will be the 17 nominee presentations for the 4th Digital Signage Best Practice Award 2010: Real world examples from all over Europe.

>More discussion on content in general.
Keith Kelsen will do a presentation dedicated to content.
A special forum for production manager where we discuss and present solutions for a optimized production work flow for all digital media, printed or played out on screens
German Out of Home Association will be on the forum with 6 presentations show casing the possibilities of classic OOH and DOOH.
Empea will show case the very cool Kooba technology to get an efficient back chanel for all kind of print or screen content – you have to see this.

>A blogger lounge with free wi-fi would have been nice.
Well, viscom frankfurt will see a blogger lounge first time this year. It is close to the digital signage lounge.

>The Zone was a little too close to some of the loud printing machines and made it hard work hearing presenters at times.
Always a problem at mixed shows. The Digital Signage World is in one corner of the hall and the forum is surrounded by Digital Signage exhibitors.

>Why not have downloadable versions of the presentations so attendees can download to their mobile devices?
We provide videos for most of the presentations after viscom.

>Create a seminar to showcase how digital assets can be re-puposed for digital signage, with real world examples

That is part of the production manager meeting on Friday 5.11.2010

And we will have viscom tec.10 conference the day before the viscom Frankfurt 2010 opens its doors. This one day conference is all about “How to create customer focused experience with technology” and will have well known speakers like Jason Goldberg and Paul Flanigan but also best practise examples like Diesel and Benetton. This will be not the typical “good to see you – where is the buffet” event.

It is very important to understand that the Sign and Digital Sign(age) industry has more in common then some of the solely soft/hardware focused “Industry analysts” like to believe.

Dylan, it was a pleasure to meet you at the show. Thanks for the good suggestions. I wish I knew you needed WiFi access; I would have given you our code 😉
