OpenSplash Timeline

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

After three industry meetings in Munich (October 2010), Montreal (January 2011) and most recently Las Vegas (February 2011), we are now able to publish a timeline for OpenSplash and are close to formally announcing the formation of a technical steering group to help oversee its development in the first few months of its life.

The technical steering group is currently made up of volunteers from Starmount Systems, Dynamax, Ayuda Media Systems, signagelive and ourselves (in the guise of Andrew Neale, our Technical Director).

The steering group will oversee the checking-in and checking-out of code and quality control. Andrew will act as main administrator.

We have a very aggressive timeline, aiming as we are for a public demonstration from a dozen or so companies at #ScreenMediaExpo in May in London.

– Starting now we are working on documenting and prepping the Splash player. That will take 30 days, so by the first week of April…

– OpenSplash code and a single Windows build will be available (this is vendors’ first chance to look at the code and run a player)…

– It will take us another 30 days from that point to prep the ‘Community process’ and have OpenSplash truly up on LaunchPad

– Whilst some development work will have have gone on prior to that last 30 day period, it is at this point (less than 60 days from now) when vendors will be starting their serious CMS integration and screen / display integration efforts.

– OpenSplash will run on the Microsoft Windows and Linux OS platforms (via mono) initially.

This is, we think, a very exciting time for the industry and we look forward to having dozens of OpenSplash supported networks, screens, displays, CMS systems and aggregators all on display in London.

This is a great initiative for the industry and we are looking forward to supporting the technical development of the player for use with signagelive in the near future.

It is great to see yet another SMIL implementation (as we understand from the official press release) becoming available. IAdea continues to drive the awareness and deliver the best hardware playback devices for the SMIL ecosystem.
