Samsung Mobile’s Free Mobile App Boot Camps For Students

Gail Chiasson, North American Editor

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), leading mobile phone provider in the US and smartphone provider worldwide, is hosting four two-day mobile applications boot camps free for academically advanced high school students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The camps will introduce the students to the growing mobile applications industry and provide a chance to develop the ‘next big thing’ in mobile applications. During the boot camps, students will have access to mobile technology leaders, application developers and web entrepreneurs to learn about the latest developments in mobile technology and innovative mobile application campaigns through case studies and interactive panel discussions.

Students will use the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 to access the program curriculum, research the digital landscape and learn about mobile applications.

“Samsung hopes to positively influence proficiency and the future by fostering students’ interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics,” says Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile). “The boot camps aim to cultivate understanding of how to apply what they are learning in school to real world opportunities. We hope to inspire a new generation of young engineers.”

Participating students will be able to submit their own mobile application concept proposal for a chance to win a grand prize of $20,000 in scholarships; second and third place winners will receive $10,000 and $5,000 in scholarships. All winners, plus one fourth and one fifth place winner will receive Samsung Mobile’s flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone.

Samsung is working with Scholastic – the global children’s publishing, education and media company – to develop the activities for the boot camps as well as teacher resources that will be available online for teachers interested in teaching mobile application development during the school year.

Highly recognized engineering universities were selected for the boot camps in an effort to provide the students the ability to gather insight and information about the engineering field as they are nearing the college application process. As a part of the boot camps, students will be able to speak with distinguished faculty and graduate students from the host universities and Samsung Mobile executives to discuss the role technology can play in improving their community and beyond.

Samsung Mobile Application Boot Camps will be held at the following locations:

  • July 11-12: San Francisco, CA, University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley);
  • July 18-19: Dallas, TX, University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas);
  • August 8-9: Atlanta, GA, Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech);
  • August 15-16: Boston, MA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
