Sony Professional Display Group Layoffs To Hit Europe

Adrian J Cotterill, Editor-in-Chief

The rumour at #dse2013 was that most, if not all of the Sony professional display group in North America were let go during that week. NOT TRUE said Sony’s PR folks who sent us a nice email (note, not a legal letter Lorne and others) after our post, which said “Sony Electronics remains committed to professional display and to our customers in that market. Sony is constantly evaluating its areas of operation, to focus on critical business markets for growth, and that includes display solutions”.

Sony continued “We have made some recent personnel changes in our professional display group, but Sony is still very active in display solutions, as shown by our presence at Digital Signage Expo 2013″.

Our take was, and still is, that Sony will leave the professional display business totally. We now hear that in a a little over a week there could be mass layoffs for Sony teams involved in displays across the whole of Europe.

It likely won’t be pretty.

This rumor was and is untrue. Professional display is and remains a core business for Sony, and Sony will not be leaving that business. — Tom Di Nome, Sony Electronics, Corporate Communications.
