Influential My Arse

There’s seemingly an unwritten rule with those who write and comment on the digital signage industry not to get in fights with each other over comment, reporting and what have you. For those who flock to our own site (many of them industry newcomers) they don’t want to see ‘insiders’ squabbling but I am afraid that this week we need to break that cardinal rule as we cannot let the rubbish cobbled together by Christopher Hall over at DigitalSignageToday go unanswered.

We are talking of course of his purported list ‘The 11 Most Influential Executives in Digital Signage‘ which contains (one assumes in alphabetical order) page by page; Jose Avalos, Alan Brawn, Lyle Bunn, Philip M. Cohen, Brian Dusho, Paul J. Fleuranges, Chris Gibbs, David Levin, Garry McGuire, Tom Nix / Peter Cherna.

Seriously? I mean seriously? This is supposed to be a list of the industry’s top movers and shakers? We quote “these industry leaders have stood out over the last 12 months for the work they’ve done to make the industry stronger from within and to promote the medium without..

Now, we love lists. They are a useful, if somewhat, sometimes lazy journalistic, way to get easy copy. This list was supposedly put together by the ‘industry’ voting – though we would love to see the raw data that supports the inclusion of some of the idiots listed.

Bottom line, this list is fundamentally flawed and whilst it wouldn’t be a particularly exciting industry if we all agreed on everything, I do feel that Christopher Hall and DigitalSignageToday have done the industry a disservice by publishing what is, quite simply, an ill-conceived and poorly thought out list of random names*.

‘Clowns’ too strong?. An unrecognised ‘body’ with no right to formally award a degree, gives an ‘honorary doctorate’ to a consultant. Go figure.

††Issues that need thought leadership and deeper analysis include; the patent issue(s), Samsung’s back-door, why start-ups keep re-inventing the wheel, lack of good content (and how to produce great content) etc.

*So, who might be on a proper list of industry influencers? In no particular order; Mark Boidman, The Mighty Phil Cohen, Garry McGuire, Steve Nesbit, Andreas Soupliotis, François de Gaspé Beaubien, Arsenal Media’s Denys Lavigne, Posterscope’s James Davies, Simon Sugar etc.

I agree with many of these arguments. When I think about industry “influencers” some names come to my mind, but do not see them on this list. Long life to lists, gurús and experts.

Get over yourself, Adrian. What could possibly qualify you as one to judge?

The most consistent comment I have heard about your writing, has nothing to do with the subject matter; it has to do with your testy personality.

As much as you would like it to be, it’s not about you.

It’s actually Lyle Bunn (Ph.D Hon) 🙂

Definition of mover and shaker “One who wields power and influence in a sphere of activity” . That’d be Adrian then.
I have not heard of most of these, clearly I need to get out more.

I appreciate your making provocative statements.. as it is your publishing and editorial business to generate dialogue and readership… just as it is mine to help professionals and organizations succeed in applying digital signage – through the information, education and consulting services I provide. I’ll stand on my record of contributions.

Along with many successes, we, as an industry, continue to have failed and under-performing investment.. suggesting that it takes many in the village to raise awareness, competency and practices. There are many, many people in the “go to” department and I appreciate DigitalSignageToday’s efforts, as I do that of all publishers, event producers, end users and suppliers who comprise this village.

There could have indeed been many more on this list.. including Chris Riegel, CEO STRATACACHE (who you mention), who along with Gary McGuire and others of RMG who have (typically too quietly) advanced use of the media.. I look forward to their commentary at The DailyDOOH Investor Conference – which I have promoted in education events, linked to from the events page of my site and sent my registration for.

Clowning around is not my style or that of other serious people in the industry who are most aware of the challenges we collectively, and through individual contributions, must meet.

mmm – isn’t the list a tad american – I am sure there are movers and shakers in the UK, Europe and far afield.

The list looked more like an award ceremony for the AV industry – pay for a table and you will be nominated

Do people know Dooh is a worldwide industry not just USA

And as for Adrian – he’s like marmite – love or hate his journalism.

Keep em coming Adrian 🙂

Adrian:

How does this approach differ from your annual Top 30 Digital Signage Software Providers List?

Wait, if you’re going to praise Chris Gibbs for the Digital Signage Federation (DSF), how can you not praise Alan Brawn for the same?!

Dear Screenie:

Because an anthropomorphic phallus with circulation issues is stupid on its face. Go hug your mommy.

Very well put Adrian. I love what you wrote. The whole idea of the list is absurd. Intel????????

In 15 years of putting digital communications into retail and public places, I have never considered myself to be in digital signage business.

Samsung and NEC sell digital signage. I sell digital communications solutions.

#17 Comment By Al On 12 January 2014 @ 21:26 @935

Jose Avalos is somewhat similar to Lyle Bunn. Intel simply one day proclaimed Jose Avalos as an influential thought leader in digital signage, and from that moment on it became an indisputable fact. If only life in the real world was that simple.

Lyle Bunn does deserve some credit though… receiving an honorary doctorate from the same organization where you’re a member of the advisory board takes balls! (see [4]). Since when did industry groups start giving out degrees?
