I thought it was cool for about a minute too. Upon viewing it up close my brain started picking out the vulnerabilities. The vast majority of vending machines I see are in unattended semi-outdoor venues, which are prone to vandalism. In fact, most of the vending machines I see in greater Los Angeles are behind metal cages to protect the machine. All I could think about was some punk putting his foot through what looked to be a 3-4 mm thick resistive touch screen. If my assumption is right about the resistive touch, then the second favorite tool of destruction would be the diamond tipped scribe. Punks use them to etch their name into bus windows and bathroom mirrors, which would effectively render the resistive touch useless and unable to sell Coke. Who knows, maybe somebody at Coke already pointed out these obvious weaknesses and the engineers at Samsung are still battling with the idea that people would vandalize their favorite beverage vending machine.

While I agree with all of your observations (especially the 'run ads" part), there will be a need for digital interaction on coke vending/soda fountains soon.

check out http://www.ajc.com/business/content/business/coke/stories/2009/03/03/coke_fountain_future.html. A 100 different flavors? can't build a dispenser with 100 analog buttons, or maybe they can:-)
