Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, Amtrak and Visit Baltimore are among the many who would like commuters and visitors to have a better impression of the city than the rundown area they view before entering the tunnel and train platform.

As a step in the right direction, a sleek billboard-sized sign that is visible from the train platform was unveiled Wednesday, August 6/14, at Penn Station, used by 2 million people annually. It’s part of an effort to spruce up the station and surrounding area to help improve the city’s image.

Rawlings-Blake has spearheaded efforts to improve the 1911 Beaux-Arts station, installing free Wi-Fi and bike racks. Now a large sign with the word ‘Baltimore’ in sleek black metal letters and an LED-screen that will highlight city events has been installed by the track. Incite LED Media Group LLC, headquartered in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, supplied the LED display for the project.

The sign is only one of several improvements being made while a formal committee formulates a full plan on improvements to the station and surrounding areas. It was paid for by the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore and Visit Baltimore. Upkeep will be facilitated by the Downtown Partnership.
