Vertigo Digital Displays Inc.,Toronto, and Esprida Corporation, Weston, Florida-based pioneer in the field of remote device management, have announced a collaboration whereby, by embedding an Esprida Agent within the Vertigo Master Control Unit, network operators gain centralized access to functions relating to ambient light, temperature, power management, system performance, service issues and connected applications.

Vertigo designs, manufactures and delivers integrated media systems for ruggedized, digital signage solutions deployed in a variety of environmental conditions, including advanced display enclosures, as well as world-class street furniture, transit shelters and digital information kiosks. (Ed. See our Feb. 18, 2010 article.) With screens exposed to the effects of extreme cold and heat, direct sunlight, precipitation and vandalism, Vertigo’s remote management capabilities offer its customers a solution tailored to the unique requirements of out-of-home digital signage.

As an Esprida-powered platform, secure, role-based access can be granted to partners, clients, service companies and program management.

Omnivex, Concord, Ont., has announced a new version of its Moxie software for digital signage, with features geared to be used with the newest, sophisticated installations, as well as new capabilities being tested.

The features of Moxie 6.05 received an enthusiastic response from visitors at the recent Integrated Systems Europe show in Amsterdam and the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas.

Large video walls have become increasingly popular in all types of digital signage deployments. Hardware manufacturers have developed flat screen displays with much thinner bezels than ever before so it is relatively easy to tile screens together to form one large display.

With the magnitude of the video wall and sheer number of displays, combined with the often intricate configuration of screens coupled with complex multimedia content, it is often no longer practical to manage such video walls with a single PC.

Omnivex Moxie 6.05 has the functionality to manage video walls driven by any number of PCs to form single or multiple images through the Video Wall Synchronization feature. A video can span multiple PCs, be displayed on multiple screens and remain in frame synchronization, even in the event of one or more Player PCs restarting. The end result is one perfectly unified, visually stunning video wall that is capable of managing the most elaborate content imaginable.

There are numerous upgrades and modified features in Moxie 6.05 to streamline workflow and extend functionality. Users of Moxie 6.05 can set up multiple tasks to synchronize remote files, playlists, schedules, etc. to the Data Server folder. Users can then simply drop content files into a synchronized folder on their network and Moxie will retrieve them.

With Moxie’s Data Proxy capability, multiple Players can connect through a single node, dramatically reducing network traffic and improving efficiencies

Already known for making significant advancements in the digital signage market place, Moxie has been recognized with many awards. Introduced to the market only 12 months ago, it was honored by industry experts as the ‘Best New Premise Based Content Management Software’ at the 2009 DIGI Awards. Additionally, two Moxie customers were recognized with 2010 APEX Awards: Portland’s Rose Garden Arena won an award in the Hospitality category for its 250 screen deployment of Moxie powered digital menuboards, while Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment won an award in the Stadiums & Arenas category for its 320 screen Moxie digital signage network throughout Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

Founded in 1991, Omnivex Corporation is a leader in software development for digital signage networks and electronic displays. Omnivex software is used by over 2,000 customers, including many Fortune 500 companies, to manage all aspects of digital signage networks, including content management, real-time data acquisition and distribution, and remote device monitoring and management.

During the DSE in February, the company was named to DailyDOOH’s Top 10 Digital Signage Vendors 2010.

We’ve seen a couple of recent reports on the topic of apps and Smart Phones that we thought were worth sharing.

First of all, a new study conducted by Chetan Sharma Consulting, Issaquah, Washington, on behalf of mobile applications download service GetJar, San Mateo, California, states that mobile apps will outsell CDs by 2012

The study forecasts that app downloads will increase from current annual levels of more than 7 billion to nearly 50 billion by 2012 – when their US$17.5 billion revenue would overtake that of the $13.8 billion of CDs.

And San Francisco-based Flurry, which offers, deployment and monetization tools for mobile application developers, and tracks over 20,000 live applications and over 2 billion user sessions each month, notes that, since the App Store launched in July, 2008, 35,000 unique companies have released applications, which translates to 58 new companies launching apps each day.

Flurry has been tracking apps for the iPhone compared to apps for Facebook since each were launched, making comparisons in the same time frames (eg. in the first nine months, etc., for each). In January, 2010, in terms of growth, the number of iPhone apps was reported to have exceeded 140,000 compared to the 60,000 it estimated Facebook had reached over its first 18 months.

As well, through applications using Flurry for analytics reporting, Flurry can detect and count unique devices in the market such as Google Nexus One and Motorola Droids. Because applications embedded with Flurry have been downloaded to over 80% of all iPhone OS and Android devices, Flurry is able to make reliable estimates about total handset sales.

Its finding: despite that fact that the Google Nexus One is the most advanced Android handset to date and enjoyed heavy marketing, its sales are much lower than expected. Based on the first 74 days of sales of each from their launch, the Droid had 1.05 million sales; the iPhone had 1 million; and the Nexus One, only 0.135 million. (The Droid was launched during the holiday period, one of several reasons believed to account for its fast high sales.)

And Apple announced this week that it will include a dedicated ‘iPad’ app category in the App Store.

Auto tray tables, mobile pet water bowls, and software to disable smart phone e-mail and texting while driving are among prizes being offered to motorists filling up at PumpTop TV gas stations across the country.

But while not everyone will win prizes, all will be able to learn about new gadgets invented just for their driving convenience from Today Show’s Steve Greenberg.

Greenberg has produced a series of exclusive 30-second editorials where he introduces handy gadgets that many need, but never realized were invented.

They’re being shown on PumpTop TV screens to be seen by drivers filling their gas tanks. For instance, he will introduce the Auto Tray Table that hooks onto the steering wheel and serves as a workspace or a surface to lay out meals and snacks – handy for sales people and others who practically live in their cars.

“All of the gadgets that we show on PumpTop TV were invented just for the automobile, yet most people don’t even know these products exist,” says Greenberg, who is also the author of Gadget Nation, a coffee table book about America’s most interesting gadgets and the inventors behind them.

Motorists have the opportunity to win Auto-Tray Tables and other cool gadgets by sending an email to the address provided exclusively at the pump.
