Greetings from Seoul, Korea – The Future City

Manolo Almagro, Q Division Managing Partner

As much as I love NYC,  – my soul lives in Seoul. It is THE place to look at when you want “life-size” or real-life visualizations of what cities of the near future will become. For those of you who don’t know – Seoul is home to the the world’s most innovative technology companies such as LG, Samsung as well as hyper-advanced telecom/mobile companies such as SK Telecom and KT Corporation.

Some interesting stats:

Seoul is the world’s most connected (as in, broadband everywhere!) cities in the world with 83% penetration of broadband for its 22 Million inhabitants, not to mention, 4 out of 5 households have some sort of hyper-fast connectivity and 9 out of 10 people in Seoul have a mobile phone. In Seoul, people access the internet on the subways, while enroute to their next destination. This month, telco providers in Seoul, launched a new mobile wifi service that provides broadband internet to users traveling at 120Km per hour.

Sadly, I’m strictly bound by some iron-clad NDA’s not to reveal for whom and what I’m working on out here, (at least not yet…) BUT, I can tell you- that if you are looking for an abundance of new opportunities to create new user-generated, digital out-of-home experiences that leverage a natively digital mobile population, then get on over to Seoul!
