At the recent OAAA/Tab Convention & Expo in San Diego, Formetco Inc., based in Duluth, Georgia, showcased its latest series in LED digital billboards, branded the FTX: a ‘cooler’ option for digital billboards in that they totally do away with the need for fans.

Powering monopolizing, high maintenance, motorized fans has been the traditional system of cooling older series LED digital billboards. Formetco management says that its FTX screens pave the way for longer life displays by using series higher end components, with new thermal management technology and the elimination of fans.

With a slim, streamline appearance, and vivid graphics, the FTX drew the attention of many attendees during #Amplify 2015.

Fans consume power, require filters, and bring moisture and contaminants into the system. They are also historically the most unreliable part of a digital billboard. All of these problems lead to additional cost and maintenance. The advanced thermal design of the FTX keeps internal system temperatures within safe operating parameters. Formetco’s environmentally balanced system does not require fans for cooling of the LED screen, but instead dissipates heat both convectively and radiate.

Power consumption has always been a drawback for some smaller outdoor companies thinking of moving forward into digital outdoor and larger companies with multiple displays.

Jason Gribble, Formetco’s director of marketing, says that the FTX delivers on the company’s claim of “astonishingly reduced power consumption.” Companies have reported their FTX power bills, for full size 14’x48’ FTX bulletins, are coming in at under $200 a month – a figure interesting to many in the OOH industry as they expand their business models, and enter the digital arena.

Formetco FTX includes a standard 10-year LED brightness warranty, allowing outdoor companies to save power, reduce overhead, and have a longer life.
